What is ISO 9001?

In simple terms, ISO 9001 is a Quality Management System (QMS). This means that it is a system of processes and policies which manage and ensures the consistent quality of products and services provided by a company.

To give a little more detail and context, ISO 9001 is the world's most recognised Quality Management System. Over a million companies across the globe have applied for - and achieved - ISO 9001 certification since the system was upgraded in 2015.

Unlike other systems ISO 9001 can be used by any size of organisation and across any industry, enabling a vast number of individual businesses to benefit from having better quality management systems in place.

What are the 5 Benefits of ISO 9001?

1. Increased credibility

Having ISO 9001 certification provides you with credibility among others in your industry and your clients. You will have proven that you have stringent plans in place to provide consistency and quality across your business.

2. Potential for increased revenue

When companies choose to pursue ISO 9001 certification, they will go through an evaluation process where an internal audit of current processes is completed. This will often highlight areas which can be streamlined and can help to create further capacity for orders or clients. You can then use this increased capacity to create more revenue. You may also find that clients are more keen to come on board once you are certified as you will have increased credibility within your industry.

3. Detect and identify problems before they occur

One of the biggest features of ISO 9001 is the ability to set up a troubleshooting and warning process. This way, you can spot potential issues before they occur and avoid them.

4. Opportunities for continuous improvement

Once you have a QMS in place, you will be able to regularly evaluate how well things are going. Consider whether improvements need to be made, implement changes which increase productivity, and find ways to overcome potential challenges. All of these things will help to ensure that your business is continually improving and bettering itself.

5. Higher rates of employee satisfaction

By having plans and strategies in place, employees and employers understand the processes which need to be followed and the avenues which can be taken when things don’t go to plan. The result of this is that many companies are able to enjoy higher levels of staff satisfaction.
